Reasons Your Dog May Be Vomiting

Reasons Your Dog May Be Vomiting

At Bluegrass Animal Hospital, we see many cases of dog vomiting. Usually, it is nothing to worry about. However, there are times when dog vomiting indicates a larger medical issue. If your dog is vomiting frequently, is vomiting blood, or you are simply worried about your dog’s health, we are ready to assist you. Our veterinarian will evaluate your dog’s health to determine what is making them vomit and provide treatment accordingly.

Dog Vomiting vs Regurgitation

Sometimes, dogs regurgitate undigested food. This is usually a result of eating too much too fast. Though this is a common occurrence, it is still a good idea to keep your eye on your dog after coughing something up. Regurgitation happens quickly, usually without warning.

Vomiting, on the other hand, is often foreshadowed by your dog panting or drooling excessively, retching, or whining in distress. This can be due to gastrointestinal pain caused by the ingestion of food from the garbage, table scraps, or chew toys. The pain may also be due to something more serious, such as roundworms, viruses, or diseases. Sometimes it’s nothing more than motion sickness or stress.

Other worrisome symptoms include unusual behavior (sleeping more often, not eating, or having diarrhea), or blood in the vomit or stool. If your dog is exhibiting any of these symptoms, contact our veterinarian immediately.
